Description Incorrect Description? Tell Us!Duxford is a village in Cambridgeshire, England, some ten miles south of Cambridge. Duxford gives its name to RAF Duxford, a former Royal Air Force airfield that was used as a sector station during the Battle of Britain. Duxford Aerodrome was the home of Douglas Bader's Big Wing during that battle. Duxford airfield later became a fighter airfield for the United States Army Air Forces operating P47 Thunderbolt aircraft, it is now the Imperial War Museum Duxford.

After the war, the airfield fell into disuse until it was used in the Battle of Britain film. During that production one of the hangars was blown up to simulate a Luftwaffe bombing raid. Later it was purchased by the Imperial War Museum.

Currently, Duxford airfield houses the Imperial War Museum's aircraft collection, as well as its land warfare collection of tanks. The airfield is also home to the Duxford Aviation Society's collection of Historic Civil Airliners, including Concorde 101, a Comet 4 and a Hermes body along with 9 other airframes. The American Air Museum in Britain has recently been added to the museum complex which houses a B29, B17, B52, F111E, P-51, B24, A10, SR71 and outside an F15A.

The museum is not only home to aircraft; The Land Warfare Hall shows artillery, tanks, and other weapons. To the rear is a collection of recent acquisitions many of which are driven around over a designated obstacle course.

Another special feature of Duxford is the range of pleasure flights provided by the Classic Wings company. Visitors can fly as a passenger in one of its two Tiger Moths, the Dragon Rapide or a Harvard.

The airfield at Duxford is now home to a large number of remarkable and unique aircraft, including many airworthy aircraft operated by private groups. This includes the famous Sally B B17 Flying Fortress WW2 bomber. It is considered to be one of the most significant collections in the UK.

Finally, the museum plays host to several special events with a calendar that includes a Burma Star Day, the Flying Legends Airshow and vehicle days such as fire engines and buses.

The aeronautical adhesive Redux was devised at Duxford, the name coming from a contraction of REsearch at DUXford.
